The Brightest Shell On The Rail (Painted Shells....although not really)

Oh hello there, another photoshop experiment...

For this one, I had a shot of four, plain white shells, lined up on a railing. I used a--oh boy, let's test my memory, shall we--shallow depth of field (f2.8) to get the second (purple) shell in focus, and the rest blurry.
After I had the original image*, I was able to use color replacement and desaturation to create the above image. I worked with five layers (background, shell 1, shell 2, shell 3, and shell 4) selecting and coloring each of them separately. After I had each of the shells colored, I merged the four shell layers together and loaded my second shell. I inverted the selection (selecting everything but the second shell) and turned down the saturation. I locked the shell layer, and then converted the background to black and white. Et voilĂ !
